Training

Most people can learn to ride a bike in less than an hour.

At this point you will probably be able to practice on your own or with friends to help. We will get you over that critical first stage where you need somebody to get you going and grab you when you stop!

learner plate logoWe will show you how to start and stop safely, and give advice about how to keep practising to build up your confidence. We can usually provide a bicycle for the lesson if required and can help you buy your own.

When you have had enough of practising on your own, we can help you convert your new-found skill into something more useful by practising more difficult aspects (like going in a straight line!) so that you can start using your bike more fully for personal transport.

When you are ready you can take the Road Skills training to help you cope with everyday road and traffic conditions.

We can also run group sessions for community centres and groups where the participants can have fun on a variety of recumbent machines while learning.

To enquire about cycle training please ring the workshop on 0116 262 5551. We can then discuss your requirements and tailor a course to suit you. Please leave a message if there is no reply as we are often out training or working on community projects.

Road Skills Training

This course is for people who can already ride a bike competently but need to build their confidence for riding on the road in everyday traffic conditions.

Usually this lesson lasts between one and two hours depending on your requirements. Some people may prefer to do two separate lessons, and we can always take a cafe break!

We will help you ride in a way that asserts your place on the road without compromising your safety.
  • Learn how to communicate with other road users and anticipate their actions
  • Identify problem drivers/pedestrians/cyclists and problem locations
  • Recognise hazards
  • Plan your route (we can help you plan your route to work, for instance)
  • Check your bike for faults
  • Carry things safely
  • Security
